Each morning I get out of bed in response to the sound of my alarm, but about forty-five minutes later I truly wake up. I drift thoughtlessly to the shower. I carelessly lay toothpaste across the head of my toothbrush. Then I finally try to muster enough energy to cook my eggs and turkey bacon without setting the house ablaze. Feeling somewhat fresh and feed, I can start to make my way out of the house. It isn’t until I awake the illustrious BMW inline six engine that I can break myself free of the fatigue and obscurity. The metallic rasp, refined by the three stage intake, carries a sweet tune straight from the high compression engine all the way to the dual exhaust pipes. Press the start button; hold DTC for five seconds to disengage any electronic driving assists, and just let the engine breathe for a second. From there, I just slip the drive selector into the Steptronic setting and open that engine up top to bottom, feeling more alert with each gear change.
As a self-proclaimed BMW enthusiast (and general car enthusiast), I decided I want to spend my time writing about the cars that I love. They get my blood pumping, they get my thoughts racing, and those sport seats always hold me tight when no one else will. And don’t mistakenly think I’m talking all about flash or ostentatiousness. My love affair with Bavarian Motor Works began with riding in my older brother’s ’87 BMW Charcoal Grey 535is and that thing wasn’t very luxurious at all. For the first couple of months he had it, we had to use a screwdriver just to get in the damn trunk. It lacked random trim pieces inside and out, and it left an oil signature wherever you parked it. Although, you just couldn’t deny that the lines of that 5 Series were so bold and elegant. I’ll be the first to tell you, there weren’t many feelings that rivaled being thrown back into those Recaro seats when my brother was clutching in and out. Apart from the ever-present smell of motor oil, that old beater car was an enthusiast’s dream.
Like many other enthusiasts, my dream is simply to enjoy my passion with others who share it. Right now those opportunities are dwindling. Once a year local Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche enthusiasts host one of the largest euro make-specific car meets in the South, Southern Wörthersee. And as you can imagine, us “Bimmer” guys show up in droves to join in celebrating German engineering. However, this year after many burnouts, speeding tickets, and mischief, Southern Wörthersee has been banned from hosting again in the scenic city of Helen, GA. SoWo, as it is affectionately referred to, has served as a mecca for car lovers regardless of make and will be missed by the community. I implore you to fight for your passions and sign this petition to bring SoWo back to Helen for 2016. Our community is only as strong as its members; therefore, do your part to maintain safe havens for those who need to press a gas pedal in the morning a lot more than they need coffee.
